How We Got the Bible
Lesson #15-English Translation at the Bible (Part 6)

VI. Before looking at several translations more closely, let's compare the same verse (2 Peter 3:10) as it is rendered in different English versions.

King James(KJV): "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

New KJ(NKJV): "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up."

Catholic(DOUAY): "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; at that time the heavens will pass away with great violence, and the elements will be dissolved with heat, and the earth, and the works that are in it, will be burned up."

ASV: "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

NASV: "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up."

RSV: "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up."

NIV: "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare."

How do these translations of the same verse differ among themselves?
More importantly, how do they harmonize with other Bible passages which deal with the same subject?  (
Read: I Thess. 5:1-6; Matt. 24:35; John 18:36)
