There are those who consider Bible Study to be unnecessary. However, to the one who has a broader perspective of life and its temporal nature, Bible Study is not only useful for everyday living but also essential for eternal happiness. To these ends then, our well-being demands that we all acquire a knowledge and understanding of God's Word in order to become obedient to God's will and thereby achieve happiness for ourselves both in this life on earth and in eternal life. Consider, for example, the following situation as told in the parable of the Rich man and Lazurus: (Luke 16:19-31)

"There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

The point of the parable is obvious. If one wishes to live their earthly life, as the Rich Man did, without any consideration for God's will, then eternal happiness will not be assured. True happiness lies in pleasing God while we still have the time. Once time is no more, our deeds on this earth will provide the testimony for the quality of our eternal life Accordingly, the design and construction of these lessons is intended for anyone:

  • who would like to know more about the Bible
  • who would like to have a better understanding of the Bible
  • who has a sincere desire to study the Bible to learn of God’s will
  • who is concerned about their future in eternity.

The material presented in these Lessons was compiled from notes accumulated over several years and from many Bible class studies. In addition other sources were consulted in order to develop the best organization for presenting these Lessons. A list of these sources is given in the Bibliography page that follows the lessons.

In these Lessons we will examine and discuss

  • The importance of Bible study.
  • The attitudes and motivation necessary to fully benefit from a study of the Bible.
  • The role of the Old and New Testaments in God’s plan for man.
  • How God teaches us His will.
  • The rules governing a proper study of the Bible.
  • The Authority of the Bible.
  • The tools available to help us in our study.
  • A suggested schedule for studying the Bible.

It is suggested that some of the other material presented in the Bible Room also may be helpful. It is recommended that the following web pages be examined as a means of supplementing this study:
