Lesson 2 - ATTITUDE AND MOTIVATION
Desiring to learn
Too many believe that the Bible is for specially trained people, such as clergymen, and not for the average person. Consequently they approach the Bible with some trepidation, convinced that they cannot understand it. As a result they do not begin their study with the correct attitude or proper motivation. This lesson will examine some of the elements that are necessary for one to undertake a comprehensive study of the Bible.
In order to properly study the Bible one must have a sincere desire to want to learn and to have the inherent attitude to want to know and practice. To study the Bible means more than to read it casually or infrequently. Serious study implies a dedicated effort to seek the truth. Without this desire, there cannot be any realistic learning. Bible study is not easy work. It is hard work and not for the lazy, listless, or indifferent. Unfortunately, the Bible is seen as unnecessary by many. However, there are many who want to study the Bible but have never learned HOW. A proper study will involve these basic principles:
Commitment: The serious Bible student will display a willingness to trust God and to have faith in God and to regard the words as the Word of God. There must be a strong desire to feed the spiritual body each day and to use the Bible to seek answers in their daily life. One needs to determine what it is that one wants to get out of the scriptures.
Organization: A Bible study program must start out by setting goals and allotting sufficient time for the study. Establishing and defining methods and area of study is necessary in order to form a good plan of study. There needs to be a regularly planned schedule for the study, preferably one that is done on a daily basis.
Understanding: The Bible student must come to the study without pre-conceived ideas or establishing rules. Employ common sense; determine whether the language being used is figurative or literal, being careful to observe context, not quoting out of context, considering all parts and associated verses. Determine who is speaking, who is being addressed; let plain passages explain difficult passages;
Concentration: A serious Bible study will require self discipline, -learning to focus ones mind and attention on what we they reading. Reading should be done thoughtfully and reflectively in order to fully understand the passage under consideration.
Repetition: One must display a willingness to review and to re-read the passages in order to obtain the correct interpretation. There is no other alternative which will insure that Gods word is properly interpreted and understood.
Awareness: Be aware of the need for God and His word in ones lives,
Discussion: Be willing to discuss passages with others, while always maintaining an open mind with the prime goal being to seek out the truth in Gods word.
Study Aids: There are many aids available to assist the Bible student in seeking the truth. These will be discussed in a later lesson. Top
