Book of Matthew - Lesson 1

 

Outline

 

Introduction: Feature of the book:

 

1.       Writer—Matthew, also called Levi, an apostle  (Mk. 2:14; Lk.5: 27-29; Matt. 10:3)

2.       To whom written—Primarily Jews: Evidence—his use of the O.T. Scriptures

3.       Purpose of the book—to show that Jesus of Nazareth was the kingly Messiah of the Jewish prophecy.(see Table 2) Therefore, the key word is “fulfilled.” Great emphasis is placed on the teachings of Jesus.

4.    When written: approximately AD 50-70

 

 

Our Objective in studying the book:

 

1.     To follow Jesus, hear Him preach, see what He teaches and how He teaches, see Him deal with problems

(see Table 4)

2.       Have our faith in Him increased; see how to appreciate His saving power.

 

I. THE PREPARATION FOR INAUGURATION OF HIS MINISTRY (1:1-4:11)

 

A. Preparation for Ministry(Chapters 1-3;4:1-11)

    1. Legal ancestry (Genealogy); miraculous conception; fulfillment of prophecy (Ch. 1)

    2. Birth place; adoration; flight to Egypt, and home in Nazareth (Ch. 2:19-23)

B. The Inauguration (3:1-4:11)

    1. His Baptism by John, the forerunner of Christ (Ch. 3)

    2. Temptation;His victory over Satan in the wilderness (4:1-11)

 

II THE MINISTRY ITSELF! (4:12-20:34)

 

A. To the Multitude, mainly in Galilee: Summary of the Galilean  Ministry (4:12-15:20)

     1. Calls His disciples, gives Sermon on the Mount (4:12--7:29)

     2. Performs Miracles (Chs. 8-9)

     3. He sends forth the twelve   Apostles (see Table 3);proclamation of the Kingdom (church) (Ch. 10)

     4. His testimony of John, and against the wicked cities (Ch. 11)

     5. He condemns the enemies of the kingdom (Ch.12).

     6. He utters parables concerning the kingdom (Ch. 13)

     7. Miracles cause Herod to surmise that John  had risen (Ch. 14).

     8. He answers His critics regarding purity (Matt. 15:1-19)

B. The Disciples: The Perean Ministry (15:21-20:34)

     1. Miracles (See Table 1), Influence, and Opinions (15:21- 16:34)

     2. The necessity and glory of the cross (16:21- 28)

     3. Transfiguration, Healing, and Tribute (Ch. 17)

     4. Eternal Blessings limited to the humble (ch.18)

     5. The Creator on Marriage and Serving (Ch. 19)

     6. Distribution according to God’s Sovereign  will; self-sacrifice in service; he opens the eyes of the blind (Ch. 20)

 

III. THE GLORIOUS CONCLUSION OF HIS MINISTRY (21:1-28-20)

 

A. Covering the periods of the Triumphal entry into Jerusalem until His death (21:1-27:66)

     1. Entry according to prophecy (21:1-22:14)

     2. He answers questions (22:114-46)

     3. He condemns the leaders (Ch. 32)

     4. He speaks of their fall and the end (Chs. 24,25).

     5. After eating the Passover, He instituted the Supper, prayed, is captured and denied by His disciples (Ch. 26)

     6. He is delivered and crucified, buried and guarded (Ch. 27)

B. Resurrection and Commission (chapter 28)

     1. He triumphs over false religious leaders, who bribe the soldiers 28:1-15

     2. He gives the apostles hope and a work to do  (28:16-20)

 

Conclusion: If you and I believe the account given by Matthew, and if we will obey the terms of the great commission --Believe, Repent, Confess and be Baptized, we, too, can have hope. Likewise, if we will make the terms of salvation known to others, we will have Him with us, and we can help others find eternal life, too. We need to be sure we are observing all things He commanded His apostles (28:20), being faithful until death (Rev. 2:10)
