Book of Matthew - Lesson 9

(Read Matthew 6:19-30)

Introduction: Lesson 9 deals with the wrongful laying up treasures; yielding to the master who is not interested in our well-being; failing to set right priorities, and worrying about tomorrow. Each of these matters, we, Christians, citizens of the kingdom, ought to be concerned about. Let us look closely at each of these categories, and then make application of them in our lives.

1. Laying up treasuries on the earth is to act foolishly and predicts ultimate failure! Certainly, we all need a certain amount of money to purchase the necessities of everyday physical life. God does not want us to neglect that (Eph. 4:28; 1 Tim. 5:8), nor do we need to. The point, however, is that any treasures that we have amassed  are for our temporal use while we are on this earth. , When we die, we shall have to leave this earth, and we will take nothing with us when we go(1 Tim. 6:7). If we are prepared to meet the Lord, all will be wonderful for ever (Matt. 25:34). However, if we are unprepared  we will have leave it all behind (Matt.25:41,46)and our reward will be  to experience eternal torment for ever!  With this revelation before us, how unwise it is for anyone to continue unprepared, working so hard to achieve worldly riches which will have to be left behind when we die.

2. Yielding to the right/wrong master is a matter to which each should give serious attention. (Matt 6:24). Jesus is our Lord/Master but only if we will yield our lives to Him (Matt. 11:28-30). But come we must  (Jn. 6:44-45). We are to do the yielding (Rom. 6:16-18). If we yield, we will do what He says (Lk. 6:46).

3. Priorities are worth our serious consideration (Matt 6:25-33). Jesus first  points to our limitation (v. 27): how little can we do to change our physical stature. Secondly, we are told to look at how God provides for the birds and the lilies of the field.  The point being made is that if  He is so good in providing for such creatures, that He surely can provide for us, providing that  we put first things first (Matt.30)! There is a need for each person to put his/her trust in God, and not become so concerned with the everyday things of food, clothing, and shelter, etc., that we forget God and things spiritual!

4. Worrying about tomorrow is wasted energy at best, and draining of one's resources without any potential of success! (Matt 6:34). How many of us have a tendency to worry about what is going to happen tomorrow to the point that we don’t make sure we have done our duty to the Lord today? Take care of your duty relative to your spiritual obligations today, and tomorrow shall provide for itself!
