Book of Matthew - Lesson 5

(Read Matthew 5:1-12)

Introduction: This lesson examines the Beatitudes. These are the first statements made by Jesus in His Sermon on The Mount. There are a total of 9 parables, each of them beginning with “Blessed,” which simply means "happy". This  sermon was delivered by Jesus from a mountain. We don’t know the location of the mountain. But the words spoken there were recorded and preserved for mankind. They have been the source of comfort and aid  for many people. By studying these, we can have a better understanding of ourselves and others around us. Let us ponder the principles briefly

1. Poor in spirit: This means the ones who are  humble, knowing they are destitute of something --spiritual possessions — thus not haughty, arrogant. Theirs is the kingdom

2. Mourners: Those that are grieved over their sins and others, mourning for the behavior in which they have   been engaged , knowing that it is not right or pleasing to God. These will be comforted.

3. Being Meek: the persons who are kind and gentle, as Christ was, not harsh yet not weak; rather strong for RIGHT conduct and purpose in life. These will inherit the REAL blessings of the earth.

4. Hungering and thirsting after righteousness. Persons who have a craving for righteousness, just as a thirsty man craves water or a hungry person desires food. It means being RIGHT with God. These truly shall be filled!

5. Being merciful: These are people who are willing to show compassion, pity, sympathize with and help to relieve suffering. These will receive mercy,  -just as each of us surely need  such!

6. Having a pure heart: having clean, sincere motives and purpose. Purity of heart is freedom from evil desires and purpose, not double mined (Jas. 4:8). Hearts are purified by faith and obedience (Acts 15:9; 1 Pet. 1:22). These will see God and enjoy His presence!

7. Being a peacemaker: What a contrast between the world and what exists (or should exist) in the kingdom of Christ. Peace between all men and  between men and God in a righteous fashion. This is the purpose and mission in the Kingdom of God.

8. Being persecuted for righteousness’ sake: brings a different response than those in the world. The attitude of the citizen in the kingdom of Christ, is to endure persecution, when it is for Right living..

Conclusion:While the parables may seem  paradoxical in nature, they contain truths that can challenge our minds all the days of our existence. They may appear to be contradictory, but are not.. “In theses beatitudes Jesus teaches the characteristics of the citizens of his kingdom; they are the fundamental principles of the Christian character.” (H. Leo Boles, Commentary on Matthew, page 120)
