Book of Luke -  Lesson  2

Read Luke 1:26-56

Introduction: In our last study we saw how the parents of John the Baptist reacted to the announcement that they were going to be able to bring forth a child. Now, in this study we’ll see how Jesus Christ was conceived, and how the two cousins, and soon-to-be-mothers, rejoiced. We’ll, also see some comments made during their meeting and announcements of the two pregnancies.

1. It was in the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, that the angel Gabriel "was sent" to the virgin Mary in the city of Galilee in Nazareth. She was greeted, "Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." (V. 28). She was "espoused" to a man whose name was Joseph. She was told that she would have a child.  However, she expressed skepticism of that because she had  known (sexually) "not a man."

2. Gabriel, the angel, described how the baby she would bear would be the "Son of the Highest." He would be given the "throne of his father David." He would reign for ever over the house of Jacob, and of His kingdom there would "be no end." (Vs. 32-33).

3. The angel responded to her skepticism, telling her that the "Holy Ghost" would overshadow her and she would conceive and bring forth a child who would be "called the Son of God." (V. 35). She was reassured that with God nothing is "impossible." She was also told that her cousin had conceived (vs. 36-38). She accepted the explanation, and the angel departed.

4. Following this announcement, Mary arose and went to visit her cousin Elizabeth (vs. 39-56), extending her visit about three months. In this section we have the conversation of Mary and Elizabeth about their new view of themselves. Understand that Mary was from Galilee and Elisabeth lived in the "hill country" in a city of Judah.

5. The meeting was one of joy for both women (vs. 40-56). When Elizabeth heard of the conception in her cousin, Mary, the baby "leaped in her womb." She was "filled with the Hold Ghost" and spoke out loudly, praising the event: that the mother of her Lord should visit her. She was able to rejoice in God (vs. 40-45). Then Mary speaks of how God has blessed her, even though she was of a "low estate" - a handmaid. She pointed to the fact that generations to come would look back with joy to this event, being blessed by God’s fulfillment of His promise (Vs. 46-55). After three months, Mary "returned to her own house."
