Book of Luke - Lesson. 36

Chapter  24:1-35,

Introduction: The first part of the Twenty Forth chapter of Luke Tells us of the brightest day in the history of mankind! We find Jesus coming forth from the grave, appearing to various ones, surprising them. Although He had told them more than once He would rise, yet, evidently they had failed to grasp it fully. This is indicative of man, when he has the wrong information in mind, he often places a wrong view on the messages he is confronted with.

        1. The time is early the first day of the week, people came to the grave to finish the preparation of the body they had not had opportunity to complete on the approaching Sabbath. However, they found something that challenged their thinking. "They found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher." (Lk. 24:1-  3). They were much "perplexed." Two men stood by and ask "why seek the living among the dead?" (Vs.4-5). These announced that Jesus had risen, calling to their mind words Jesus had spoken, even back in Galilee. He had told them that the Son would be "delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified and the third day rise again." (Vs. 6-7).

        2. Upon the reminder, they did remember and returned from the grave site (Vs. 8-9). Women told the apostles what had occurred, and their words seems as "idle tales," and they believed them not (vs. 10-11).

However, Peter ran to the grave and saw the linen clothes and he wondered at what had come to pass (v. 12).

        3. Beginning with (v. 13) we are given an account of "two of them" on that day to a "village called Emmaus" which was three furlongs from Jerusalem, (some say about seven miles). As they traveled, these two were talking about the things which had happened. They were so engrossed in their thinking, pondering the events, that even when Jesus came to them as they walked, they just thought he was some other person walking that way. Their "eyes were hidden that they should not know him." (Vs. 14-16).

        4. Jesus even asked a question, but they expressed their deep concerns, asking if he knew not what had occurred. And in the process they expressed their disappointment, that they had thought the one who had been crucified would have been the one who would "have redeemed Israel." (Vs. 17-21). Continuing they mentioned this was the third day, and that "certain women" had found the grave empty (vs. 22-24). Jesus even argued with them, telling them they were unwise and "slow of heart" to believe the prophets and other scriptures (vs. 25-28). Coming to the village, they "constrained" him to come in with them and ONLY as they started to eat, and Jesus took bread and blessed it, were their eyes "opened that they knew him" (Vs. 29-35).
