John Chapter 13 - Christ The Servant

 

Introduction: We begin a new section, chapters 13‑17: Private Manifestation to His Disciples!

 

   We have seen in each chapter some outstanding characteristic. Today‑‑‑the figure of a SERVANT!

 

Analysis of the chapter:

1. Vs 1‑17: Jesus washes His feet!

2. Vs 18‑30: Jesus speaks the Betrayer!

3.    Vs 31‑35: Glorification of the Son and the NEW COMMANDMENT ‑‑ to His disciples.

4. Vs 36‑38: Peter's reaction

 

  I. Washing The Feet Of His Disciples!

 

A. Time‑‑near feast of the Passover

B. Knowledge of Jesus:

       1. His hour was come!

             a. Depart the world

             b. Go to father

             c. Leave His loved ones in world

       2. The devil's done his work‑Judas!

   3. Father gave "all things" into His hands: Came from, returning!

C. Act! Vs 4

   1. Prepares self to wash Vs. 4‑5

   2. Comes to Peter

               a. Peter objects

             b. Lord: "What I do thou knoweth not now; but..shalt hereafter"

             c. Peter, "thou shall never" V. 8

             d. Jesus: Wash or have not part in

      e.   Wants to be washed completely, Lord explains NEED:

                      1) Walking in dust, sandals

                      2) Custom

   3. "Not all"‑‑spiritually, v. 10

              a. Judas ‑‑ part of them

              b. When washed in baptism, need only sins latter by Lord D. Question, V. 12

   1. "Know ye what I have done to you?"

   2. Meaning?

             a. Master and Lord has done!

      b.   Ye ought to do it for each other, Serve!

             c. "Example" of WHAT?

   3. Are we to do today, in assembly?

             a. Why ‑‑ Yes/No?      b. Explain: Domestic matter; never church ordnance for public!

 

 II. Attitude of Jesus: Lord a Servant!

 

A.    Came from father to die for us, Phil. 2:4‑11

B. Told Disciples, Mt, 23:11; 20:25‑28

 

        III. Attitude of Disciples: Self‑

                       Exalting!

 

A. Who is greatest? Mt. 18:1

       1. Disputed, Mk. 9:33; Lk. 22:24‑27

       2. Mother sought

B. Today, often misunderstood!

       1. Seek power to be served

       2. Seek to be honored

 

            IV. Facts: This Lesson For Us!

 

A. Greatness in Kingdom obtained:

       1. By Serving. Doing, Contributing!

       2. Not by titles, being served, etc!

B. Positively:

   1. However, some mis‑perceive and won't shoulder responsibility!

   2. Fear of false charge!

 

                    V. New Commandment!

 

A. What is it?

   1. To love as before? No!

   2. "As I have loved you" V. 34

B. Nature of:

   1. Love each other

   2. As I have loved you

               a. Love is manifested by giving!

               b. Do we deceived ourselves?

C. Results ‑‑ Identity!

   1.      "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye love one another." V. 35

   2. Let us not misunderstand WHAT love

               IS and DOES, however!
