John Chapter 14 - Christ, The Great Consoler
Introduction: "Man that is born of woman is of few days, and
full of trouble " Job. 14:1. However , there is a great consoler,
who says, "Let not you heart be troubled." Today, we consider CHRIST
THE GREAT CONSOLER!
1. Setting: with the inter circle of Disciples
a. Important section : Only place found
1) Need to understand NATURE of to get whole lesson
2) Primarily to Apostles, thus limited in application
b. Situation: in shadow of cross
1) Occasion of uncertainty, doubt, confusion "trouble."
2) Advise --Don't be! There's no reasons to be!
2. General Lesson --to All Christians, relative to
trouble!
Analysis:
Vs. 1-4: Statement, faith and confidence, designed
to stabilize
Vs. 5-14: Inquiry of Thomas and Philip: destiny
and identity with Father
Vs. 15 -21: How and with whom He , and the Father
will abide
Vs. 22 -31: Judas' Inquiry, relative to how He
manifests to Disciples and not to the World: Lord 's answer!
The Great Consoler:
A. To Apostles :
1. Let not your heart be troubled, because:
a. Faith in the Father and in me
b. Fact:
1) plenty of room for all
2) I go to prepare a place for
3) I'll come and receive you, so you may be where I am
4) Where I go, you know the way
2. Thomas uncertain; Jesus explains:
a. "I am" way, truth, and life
b. Come to Father by me, only
c. You have seen Him in me
3. Philip asked to be shown Father. Jesus says: you have seen, heard him in
have Faith in me will allow you to do more than
4. Explains--LOVE produces obedience, which brings
presence of Christ and Father; disobedience evidences lack of love 5. Holy
Spirit -- a Comforter --will come when I go, V.26. a. He'll teach "all
things." He’ll cause you to remember! B. To Disciples in General :
1."Comfort" suggest the idea of bracing, rather than soothing.
It indicates the strength which comes from companionship with the Lord. a.
Comfort: knowing a home awaits, Rev. 14:13; I Theses.. 4:18
b. Comfort : even in dark, pain, uncertainty and
deprivation! 2. Faith in God, required in Jesus as the CHRIST, the Son of God!
a. He came from God, revealed Him to us, and told us His will. b. He is the WAY,
Truth, and Life! First, one MUST be IN Him!) Initially,
Con: He promised, delivered, is coming!
Questions:
1. Who should NOT be troubled Vs. 1-11?
2. What are the "Greater Works" Vs. 12-14?
3. Who really loves with what results Vs. 15-24 4. 4. Why Can't World
receive Spirit? V.17
5.. Function of Spirit V.26?
6. Purpose of telling them before V.29?
7. What about “not talk much” with them vs.30-31?
