John Chapter 17 - Christ, The Great Intercessor

Introduction: This is the gospel of evidence ‑‑ showing that Jesus was and is the Divine Son of God!
1. Here we have really THE LORD'S PRAYER
a. Usually labeled, Matt. 6
b. He didn't pray that; here He is speaking to the heavenly Father
2. Analysis of the prayer:
a. For His glorification, Vs. 1‑5
b. " " " Apostles, Vs. 6‑19
c. " " " Believers, Vs. 20‑23
d. Disciples be with Him, Vs. 24‑26
3.Meaning of "Intercession": "...to make petition, especially to make intercession, plead with a person, either for or against other..."
a. Christ GO‑BETWEEN man, and God!
b. Only capable and willing One!
1) God, perfect, meeting the debt
2) Man, with all his feelings, etc. thus met the demands!
I. His Glorification! Vs. 1‑5
A."Glorify thy Son, that thy Son may glorify thee."
1. He came to glorify God: done in death, resurrection, ascension!
a. Dying for sins, to justify man.
b. Rising: show power, appear in heaven to offer the blood, as high priest, Heb. 9:1‑2
2. Power ‑‑ to give eternal life!
a.Eternal life is to know the only true God, V. 3
b. We know...we know Him,I Jn. 2:3
c. Knowing Christ who was sent,
3. His Job finished; the hour came!
B. "I had with thee before the world.."
II. His Apostles Vs. 6‑19"
A. Manifested thy name to them, V. 6
1.They have known all given me was from thee, V. 7
2. I gave them words given me, V. 8
3. Prayer for them:
a. Not for the world
b. Those given me, V. 9 are thine.
c. I am glorified in them
d. kept through thine own name 4. Only lost: son of perdition, V. 12
5. Their joy may be fulfilled, V. 13
B. I have given them thy word, V. 14
1. World hate them
2. Sanctify through thy word! V. 17
3. As you sent me, I send them, V. 19
III. All Believers! Vs. 20‑23
A.Source of belief: "for them also which shall believe on me through their word" V. 20
1. Apostles' word were to convince, convict, and persuade!
2.Every believer in this manner is the subject of His prayer!
B. Aim: "That they may all be one"
1. Fact‑‑ Unity
2.Model: "as thou father, art in me and I in thee, that they may be one in us."
a. Not one personality
b. One in aim, purpose, and nature!
3.Objective or results of prayer: "That the world may believe that thou has sent me" V. 21
a. Disunity most divisive elements in the religious world.
b.By speaking, doing, and being concerned about the same, such would be a powerful force!
4.Location of unity: in the father and Son
a. Only by, being baptized into
b. By their directions, continue!
C. Perfection:UNITY obtained IN ONE!V.23
IV. Disciples May be With! Vs.24‑26
A. Those given me may be with me
1. That they may see thy glory
2.The world has not known thee; but I have; and those have known that thou hast sent me.
3. I declared unto them thy name!
B.That the love wherewith thou hast loved me ‑‑ may be in them!
1. I will dwell in them
2. Thy love is to be with them.
