John Chapter 16 -, Christ The Spirit Giver!
Introduction: Jesus talks to apostles, the night of his betrayal.
1. That they might not be offended, V. 1
2. Predictions: Show that He was Divine
a. Informs so they will NOT be hurt
b. We can believe ALL He predicts, even what we haven't seen yet!
3. He predicts and promises: "send" the Holy Spirit,
Assuring He is divine.
4. Confusion on the subject of the Spirit, His work, etc. We'll not cover all, but encourage you to study that you might not be deceived!
5. Remember witnesses: 1) John, 2) Disciples, 3) Scriptures, 4) Father, 5) His Works, 6) Holy Spirit.
I. Facts Jesus Promised And Predicted:
A. Truth: It is expedient that He go away!
1. Hard to SEE how to their "good."
2. To their good because:
a. Necessary for Spirit to come
b. If goes away,.. He will send the Spirit
B. His (Spirit's) work, when He came, vs. 8‑11
1. Will convict, "reprove" world of:
a. Sin; b. Righteousness; c. Judgment
2. Because:
a. Sin‑‑missing the mark, transgression of God's law: 1) He brought father's message; 2) people should have believed but didn't! 3) World to be convinced!
b. Righteousness‑‑being as OUGHT!
1) He told man what he ought to be; 2) How to obtain that state; 3) He was rejected; 4) Would be convinced of that.
c. Judgment‑‑of reward for sins! 1) Prince of this world‑SATAN‑ judged, he lost the battle with Christ! 2) All will be condemned who do not His will, Matt. 7:21‑23; 3) Men to be made to see this! 4) Bounds broken‑‑resurrection!
C. Some things they were unable, before His death, to "bear" 1. So He waited to tell them;
2. Latter they were able.
D. Infallible Guide, when He came v.13
1. He completes the revelation of God
2. If He did come ( and He did), He completed the revelation! Or: a. Jesus didn't state the truth
b. Something happened to prevent; c. We believe therefore ‑‑ we have the whole TRUTH!
I. When come and How Did he convince?
A. He came On Pentecost, Acts 2 1. To the apostles; 2. Enabling them to teach the truth
B. How He worked on sinners:
1. Never directly ‑‑ if contend, where is the passage?
2. Through apostles' preaching!
a. Sin, "by wicked hands.." V. 23; b. Righteousness, "by the right hand of God exalted,..." V. 33; c. Judgment, "God hath made this same Jesus, whom ye.." V. 36
Question: Were the people convinced? "Now when they hear this they were pricked in their hearts..." V. 37
III. Why was He to Convict?
A. That they might be saved!
B. This
could be accomplished, by 1. Have heart purified by FAITH, Acts 15:9; I pet.
2. Life purifies by repentance, Acts 11:18
3. States‑‑purified
by being translated into the
Note: Such was done in Acts: Believers told to repent and be baptized, and Lord added the saved to the church (2:22‑47), which is the Kingdom!
Questions:
1. Why did Jesus speak at this time (16:1-4)?
2. What was "expedient" and why (16:5-13)
3. How was their sorrow turned into joy?
4. What could NOT man take from them? v.22
5. In Whose "name" were they to ask v.23?
6. V. 28: From where had He come? Going?
7. Disciples request and claim vs.29-30?
8. His challenge V. 31‑33
9. Location of "peace" and "tribulation"
10. Why were they to "be of good cheer"?
