John Chapter 11 - Christ, The Resurrection and The Life,

 

Introduction: Man today needs something that he can BELIEVE in. So many times he has been betrayed, deceived, and used by those who are selfish, seeking only that which will enrich them.

 

  1. John wrote that men might have a FIRM FOUNDATION for his conviction; that through the avenue of FAITH he can have life. (JN. 20:30-31)

  2. All men have been concerned about living beyond this life; because all die, and a resurrection is necessary if thee is to be life beyond!

   3. This, the eleventh chapter, is about this ‑‑ the whole thing! Jesus claims to Be the Resurrection and Life! Ample evidence it available to support!

            I. Man's Interest in Life Beyond!

A. Job 14:14: "If a man die, shall he live"?

B. Men who have denied came to the end disap­pointed!

C. Christ said he had power to give, 5:21;25‑29

D. Men of old, Acts 24:15; 23:6.

E. Erroneous ideas relative to the resurrection:

    1. Martha believed in general R. at the last day,          2. Possibility of misunderstanding

        a. "not unto death" V. 4

        b. "sleepeth" V. 11

        c. Disciples: "If...well."V.12

  II. Jesus Proclaims and Demonstrates!

A."I am the resurrection, and the Life:" V. 25

B. "Lazarus, come forth." V. 43

C. "he that believeth in me, though he were dead,

     yet shall he live; And whosoever liveth and

     believeth in me shall never die. Believest this?"

                  III. Outline of Chapter:

A. Persons, Place, and Purpose, Vs. 1‑4

    1. Family:

       a. Lazarus, the brother

       b. Sisters: Mary and Martha

           1) Mary who anointed the Lord

           2) Martha ‑‑

       c. Close relationship with Jesus

    2. Bethany ‑‑ town where they lived

    3. Sickness not to death ‑‑ manifests glory of God!

B. Jesus waits and explains, Vs. 5‑ 16

    1. He didn't go immediately

    2. He speaks of "sleep," then says plainly HE IS           DEAD!

C. Comes to Bethany, Vs. 17‑40 Martha went to meet him, v. 20 

1.   Jesus stated: "I am..." v. 25

2.   Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall  never die (v. 26-27) Her response!

    3.   Mary came to him, vs. 28‑29


    4.   They came to the grave, reminded of faith!

D. He raises the dead! Vs. 41‑46

     1. Had stone rolled away

     2. Calls: Father and Lazarus

     3. Results: He came forth

E. Gathering of the Chief Priest, Vs. 47‑54

    1. Recognize miracle, but consider expediency!

    2. Took counsel how they might capture him.

F. Time at hand, Vs. 55‑57

    1. Passover, the time of offering

        a. Historical significance

        b. Jesus the New Passover, I Cor. 5:7

    2. They sought Him:

        a. Wondering if He would avoid the feast

        b.  They issued an order that if any knew they'd

              better tell.
