The Lord's Supper

by Jim Silva

When we eat the Lord`s supper, "we gather together upon the first day of the week" (Acts 20:7). The Lord never intended that his supper should be eaten by each disciple in isolation. It is a Supper in which we were meant to participate together.

The Apostle Paul, addressed this in his letter to the Corinthians when he wrote: "The cup which we bless, is it not a communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a communion of the body of Christ? Seeing then that we, who are many, are "one bread, one body." for we all partake of the one bread (1 Cor 10:16-17).

It is obvious, therefore, that we gather together to eat the Lord`s Supper because we are one bread, one body. In the Supper,we not only display that unity but we also develop it. In the Supper,we show our loving concern for the members of the body. Paul tells us that "members should have the same care one for another. and whether one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or one member is honored, all members rejoice with it" (1 Cor 123:5-26.)

We depend upon one another, just as members of a physical body (arm, leg etc,) depend upon one another. The Lord`s Supper is a constant reminder of our need for each other. It is truly a "communion."

In addition to being a communion with each other,it It also is a "communion with our Lord Jesus." The word "communion" means "fellowship",a sharing, participation." Jesus, after instituting the Lord`s Supper, told the Apostles,"I say unto you ,I shall not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's Kingdom" (Matt. 26:29). We know from scripture that Kingdom is synonymous with the church, the church founded by Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

It follows, then that when we gather at His table in His kingdom, Jesus is there with us.(Matt 16:18-19,Heb 12:22,28). We participate in His Supper with Him and He,in turn with us. While many may disparage the opportunity each week to gather with others at the Lord`s Table,it makes a difference when we realize that we "have communion with Christ". We have fellowship with God`s own Son;we commune with our Savior in His Supper each first day of the week.

What a privilege we have on this day not only to reflect upon our Blessed Lord`s sacrifice but also to participate in this communion with Him. As we do so ,recognize that we do so in Sprit and in Truth.
