By Pat Jones

JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD ON THE FIRST DA Y OF THE WEEK

"Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons" (Mark 16:9).

JESUS MET WITH THE DISCIPLES ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK

"Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you." Now when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord" (John 20:19-20). The following first day of the week (eight days later), Jesus again met with His disciples (John 20:26).

THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK

"Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to ~peak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:2-4). Pentecost was always on the first day of the week (Leviticus 23:15-16).

THE GOSPEL OF THE DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED

ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK

"Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come..." Peter standing with the eleven said, "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know -Him, being delivered by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it" (Acts 2:1,22-24).

"Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:36-38).

THE CHURCH OF Christ W AS ESTABLISHED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK

"Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved" (ACT 2:41,47).

THE CHURCH ASSEMBLED FOR WORSHIP INCLUDING PREACHING AND THE LORD'S SUPPER

"Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight" (Acts 20:7). Note the terminology of "breaking of bread" in the assembly has to do with the Lord's Supper (1 Cor. 10:16). This "breaking of bread" is a congregational act of worship (Acts 2:42) rather than the individual household social gatherings where common meals were shared by fellow Christians (Acts 2:46).

There was a regular day of assembling for the Lord's people. "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching" (Hebrews 1 0:25).

A COLLECTION WAS TAKEN ON THE FIRST DA Y OF THE WEEK

"Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by rum in store, as God bath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come." (I Corinthians 16:1-2).

THE LORD'S DAY

In the last book of the Bible, the Apostle John wrote, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day" (Revelation 1:10) That implies that there was a certain day that belonged uniquely to the Lord. The way John used the words, "the Lord's Day," it is clear that many Christians understood what day he was talking about. Considering what we have read in the New Testament, only the first day of the week is emphasized.
